Using a GPS Receiver
Yield Monitor 2000

Introduction
You can connect an external GPS receiver to the yield monitor to collect
field position information for making a yield map. The GPS receiver sends,
the exact coordinates in degrees latitude and degrees longitude to the
monitor while you are harvesting.
Necessary
Equipment
You must use a memory card or datalogger with the monitor to record GPS
position information.
Mounting a GPS
Receiver
Follow the instructions provided with the GPS receiver for mounting the
receiver on your combine or tractor. Some general guidelines are listed
below for mounting the receiver on a combine:
•
Make sure the GPS antenna is in the middle of the combine.(If you have
two antennas, the small circular antenna is the GPS antenna, the other is
the differential antenna)
•
The antenna should be the highest point on the combine.
•
Keep the antenna away from “electrical noise” sources, such as a cab fan
motor or the engine compartment.
Compatible GPS
Receivers
Almost all GPS receivers made for agriculture applications are compatible
with the yield monitor and thus meet the requirements listed below. Ag
Leader Technology sells a Coast Guard compatible receiver, the GPS 2000,
which can be used with the yield monitor. The GPS receiver must be
configured to send GPS data according to the following parameters:
•
NMEA standard data output protocol
•
4800-X-8-1 communications protocol
•
GGA data string—the only data string needed
•
Send all messages once per second
