CANbus Installation

A Controller Area Network, or CAN, system is a high-integrity serial data communications bus that operates at
a data rate of 250 kilobits per second for real-time control applications and uses special cables and terminators
for operation. The CAN protocol has excellent error detection and confinement capabilities, making it very
suitable and reliable for agricultural applications.

CAN systems allow product nodes to be added to expand the number of control channels on the system at any
time. Five product control nodes can be connected to the Viper Pro control system for any combination of
liquid, granular, chemical injection, or spinner control applications.

Power for a CANbus system is separated into high and low current.

High current power is used to provide working power to valves and other components of the application
control system.

Low current, or logic, power is used to provide power for computing and processing the various commands
sent via the CANbus from the control console to the nodes.

CAN terminators are installed to signal the end of the CANbus and help to condition CAN communication
signals to control power surges which can cause signal or communication errors.

Note:

The cab terminator is built into the Seed Hawk

®

switch box mounted in the cab.

Adding CAN Nodes

The following procedure will assist with connecting additional liquid or anhydrous product nodes to the Seed
Hawk control system. These instructions may also help to check the node connections if the Viper Pro detects
an communication error with the liquid or anhydrous control nodes.

Note:

When controlling a Seed Hawk seeding system, the first three control channels are reserved for
the seed control system. Up to two additional product control nodes may be added for control of a
liquid or anhydrous product. Contact a local Seed Hawk dealer for more information on the
following kit options:

8 Section Liquid Control Kit Option (P/N 117-0171-229)

8 Section Anhydrous Kit Option (P/N 117-0171-230)

Mounting of the flow meter, valve manifolds and control valve will depend upon the control system
being installed. Contact a local Seed Hawk dealer for installation assistance.

To add a liquid control channel to the Seed Hawk CANbus system:

1.

Locate the drill control node (P/N 063-0173-022) mounted near the tongue of the drill.

2.

Locate the round, 16-pin connector labeled “Liquid Valves” in the area near the drill control node.

3.

Remove the protective cap from the connector.

4.

Insert the 16-pin connector on the 8 section control cable (P/N 115-3001-013) provided with the option kit
and tighten the lock ring to secure.

5.

Locate the 8-pin Deutsch connectors labeled “Liquid/NH3 Control Nodes” and remove the protective cap
from one of the connectors.

6.

Insert the 8-pin Deutsch connector on the 8 section control cable provided with the option kit. Connectors
should click together when secure.
