Fixed-Mount Camera
For all vision applications, the camera mounting must be rigid. For fixed-mount cameras, it is
important that the mounting structure be sturdy enough that the camera does not move or
vibrate relative to the product being imaged. For arm-mounted cameras, the robot must be
settled (not moving) at the picture-taking location while the image is being acquired.
Fixed-Mount Camera
A fixed-mount camera is mounted at a fixed (non-moving) location in the robot cell. The cam-
era can be attached to the cell framework, or mounted on a separate stand. The camera is
positioned directly over the part-presentation area, such as a bowl feeder, conveyor belt, or
part fixture.
Fixed-Mount Camera
NOTE: When mounting a camera for use with a conveyor belt, the camera must be
mounted far enough upstream to allow the vision processing to complete before the part
reaches the upstream limit of the belt window. The distance depends on two factors: 1)
the speed of the conveyor belt, 2) the processing time for the vision tool.
In some fixed-mount camera applications, the camera is mounted in an upward-looking con-
figuration. This method is used to refine the part position after the part is acquired by the
robot.
Arm-Mounted Camera
An arm-mounted camera is any camera that is mounted to the robot arm. Arm-mounted
cameras are often used to locate pallets (i.e., take pictures of the corners to locate a tray or
pallet, so you know where the parts are), or to refine a position.
