!! IMPORTANT: Always be sure to upgrade all parts of your system software

when you install a new version of Macintosh system software, and always

verify that the programs you use are compatible with the version of system

software you have installed. !!

A rectangular box with a greater than (>) symbol appears on the screen

Cause: You inadvertently pressed the interrupt button on the programmer's

switch.

Solution:

- Don't panic -- you will not lose any data. Simply press the G key and then

press Return. The box disappears and you can resume your work.

Printer operation

If you have a printer connected to your Macintosh, you might encounter one of

the following situations.

You give the command to print a document and the printer does not respond

Cause: The command is not reaching the printer or the printer is not working

properly.

Solutions:

- Check that the printer is switched on and warmed up. (If it is a

LaserWriter, it should have printed a sample page.)

- Check the cable connections to the printer.

- If your printer is an ImageWriter, make sure that the Select light is on.

(Press the Select button to turn the light on.)

- Check that the printer (and, if appropriate, the correct port) is selected

in the Chooser. See "Choosing a Printer" in Chapter 12.

- If the Chooser does not show an icon for the type of printer you want to

use, place the driver or drivers for that printer in the System Folder of

your startup disk and restart the Macintosh. See "Placing Printer Drivers in

the System Folder" in Chapter 12.

You print a document on a network printer and it causes the printer to

restart or to display an error message on the computer's screen

Cause: The printer has received conflicting signals.

Solutions:

- Make sure that you are using the same version of the printer driver as all

the other people on your network. (If not, replace the printer driver in your

System Folder with the one other network users are using, and restart the

Macintosh.)
