If your computer is part of a network, there is probably a network
administrator who maintains the network. Typical duties of an administrator
include making the physical connections between devices on the network,
setting up and maintaining any file servers and print servers on the network,
troubleshooting whenever network users encounter problems, and answering
questions about network services.
The following materials provide information about using a network:
- The instructions in Chapter 12, "Printing Documents," apply when you are
printing with a network printer.
- The instructions in the Network Products Installer Guide document the use
of several network products provided on the Network Products Installer disk.
- The documentation that comes with every LocalTalk cable or connector box
provides guidelines and instructions for setting up a LocalTalk network and
for adding devices to an existing network. (LocalTalk is one system of cables
used in the AppleTalk network system.)
- The documentation that comes with the AppleShare File Server software
explains how to set up and maintain a Macintosh computer (with one or more
hard disks) as a file server, and how to use the file server from any
Macintosh workstation.
- The documentation that comes with the AppleShare Print Server software
explains how to set up and maintain a Macintosh computer (with one or more
hard disks) as a print server, and how to print with a print server on the
network.
CHAPTER 17-MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING
Your Macintosh computer is sturdy and requires little maintenance. But like
any piece of electrical equipment, it should be handled carefully and set up
as instructed.
This chapter provides some general precautions for setting up and working
with the computer, as well as guidelines for maintaining a safe operating
environment for the Macintosh, instructions for cleaning system components,
and a note about Apple service and support.
In addition, you will find troubleshooting suggestions for times when you
encounter problems or unexpected situations.
Setup and general care
Follow the suggestions in this section to ensure that your Macintosh stays in
good operating condition.
All system components
When setting up and using the computer and its components, be sure to follow
these precautions:
