The computer is switched on but the screen is dark
Cause: The Macintosh is not getting power, or the screen brightness is
turned down.
Solutions:
- Make sure that the brightness setting is not turned all the way down.
- If you use a screen-saving program, press a key or move the mouse to
activate the screen's image.
- Check that the power cord is plugged in and firmly connected to the
computer and that the electrical socket has power.
- As a last resort, try switching the computer off and then on again.
When you start up, the screen is bright but the desktop does not appear
Cause: The system software is not on the disk or the disk drive is not
operating properly.
When you switch on the Macintosh and insert a disk (if your system does not
have a hard disk), you should see one of the icons shown below. (If you
switch on the Macintosh and do not insert a disk, you will see the disk icon
with the blinking question mark.)
Solutions:
- If you see the "happy Macintosh" icon, you do not need to do anything. The
system software is being loaded.
- If you see a disk icon with a blinking question mark on it, your system is
waiting for you to insert a disk.
- If you see the disk icon with an "X" on it and the computer ejects your
floppy disk, you need to insert a startup disk -- one that contains an
installed System Folder.
- If you see the "sad Macintosh" icon, there is a problem with the system
software on the disk, or possibly with the computer.
Eject the disk (by switching off the computer, then holding down the mouse
button while you switch the computer on again). Try starting up with a
different startup disk. If the "sad Macintosh" icon appears again, see your
authorized Apple dealer.
The mouse moves but the pointer does not move
Cause: The mouse is not connected properly or its signals are not reaching
the computer.
Solutions:
- Check the connection of the mouse cable.
- See whether the mouse needs cleaning, and if so, clean it. (See the
instructions under "Cleaning System Components" earlier in this chapter.)
