connect to the network and perform common network functions. Any host on a network that
obtains its network address and related network parameters from a DHCP server. The DHCP
specification is described in RFC 2131.
DHCP
CLIENT
Any client or workstation receiving network initialization parameters, such as an IP address and
other network settings, from a DHCP host.
DHCP
LEASE
The amount of time during which a DHCP client is allowed to use a particular IP address.
DHCP
SERVER
Any host providing network initialization parameters, such as an IP address and other network
settings, to a DHCP client.
DIAL IN
Port setting that specifies that other routers can initiate a connection to the local router but that
the local router cannot initiate a connection to other routers. A port can be set as both dial in and
dial out. Compare dial out.
DIAL ON DEMAND
Communication circuit opened over standard telephone lines when a network connection is
needed.
DIAL OUT
Port setting that specifies that it can initiate a connection to other routers but that other routers
cannot initiate a connection to it. A port can be set as both dial in and dial out. Compare dial in.

IAL
S
UPERVISION
The method for originating address digit transmission such as wink start and delay start.
DID
Direct Inward Dial. A DID trunk passes the last two to four digits of a phone number to the PBX
or hybrid phone system. At this point the digits are either modified by the phone system or used
as is to connect to an internal extension. This allows outside calls to reach an internal extension
directly by dialing a seven digit number.
DLCI
Data Link Connection Identifier. The frame relay virtual circuit number corresponding to a
particular destination. The DLCI is part of the frame relay header.
DNIS
Dialed Number Identification Service. DNIS provides the number the caller dialed. Used with
800 and 900 lines, DNIS capabilities allow one trunk group to be used for multiple service
applications.
DNS
Domain Name Service. A DNS server resolves an Internet domain name, such as vina-tech.com,
to an IP address. A DNS proxy manages Internet name resolution requests on behalf of devices
on a private network.
DOMAIN NAME
Name identifying an organization on the Internet. Domain names consist of sets of characters
separated by periods (dots). The last set of characters identifies the type of organization (.GOV,
.COM, .EDU,) or geographical location (.US, .SE).
DOMAIN NAME
SERVER
Network computer that matches host names to IP addresses in response to Domain Name System
(DNS) requests.
