IEEE 802.3 specification for Ethernet that uses unshielded twisted pair (UTP) wiring with RJ-45
eight-conductor plugs at each end. Runs at 10 Mbps.

ACCESS RATE

Transmission speed, in bits per second, of the circuit between the end user and the network.

ACK

Acknowledgment. Message sent from one network device to another to indicate that some event
has occurred. See NAK.

ADAPTER

Board installed in a computer system to provide network communication capability to and from
that computer system.

IGITS

The digits that specify the destination (or source) of a call, such as DTMF, MF, and pulse.

ADDRESS MASK

See subnet mask.

AIS

Alarm Indication Signal. Sometimes called a blue alarm or blue signal. In T1, the AIS indicates
to the far end of the line that the near end has detected a transmission fault at the far end. The
AIS sends ones in all bits of all time slots unframed.

AMI

Alternate Mark Inversion. Digital transmission requires that each consecutive pulse be
transmitted at opposite polarity or voltage.

ANII

Automatic Number Identification. Imbedded in the phone call is a series of digits that tell you the
phone number of the phone calling you. This identification could be used to search a database for
customer information.

UPERVISION

A means by which a PBX tells a CO that an incoming call has been answered.

ARP

Address Resolution Protocol. A basic level protocol that “maps” IP addresses to hardware
addresses.

ASCII

American Standard Code for Information Interchange (pronounced ASK-ee). Code in which
numbers from 0 to 255 represent individual characters, such as letters, numbers, and punctuation
marks; used in text representation and communication protocols.
