ASYNCHRONOUS
COMMUNICATION

Serial

communication. Network system that allows data to be sent at irregular intervals by

preceding each octet with a start bit and following it with a stop bit. The clock sources at each
end of the transmission line are independent of each other, thus they are asynchronous.

A

SYNCHRONOUS

T

RANSFER

M

ODE

(ATM)

Cell-based transfer mode that requires variable-length user information to be segmented and
reassembled to/from short, fixed-length cells and transferred from source to destination over a
set of switches.

ATM

NETWORK

A network consisting of a set of ATM switches interconnected by point-to-point ATM links or
interfaces.

ATM

SWITCH

Device that receives a cell across a link on a known virtual circuit or virtual path, identifies the
appropriate outgoing port for the cell, and retransmits the cell on that outgoing link with
appropriate connection identifiers.

AUI

Attachment Unit Interface. Connector for a thick (802.3) Ethernet transceiver cable.

AUTHENTICATION

Process that verifies a person seeking to establish a network connection is authorized to do so by
requesting a user identifier and password, which is compared to a list of authorized users and
passwords. See PAP, CHAP.

- B -

B8ZS

Bipolar 8 Zero Substitution. A line coding format in which a bipolar violation code is substituted
for a string of eight zeros. When viewing the T1 the line will be normal AMI until there is a
string of eight zeros at which time the string of eight zeros will be replaced by the B8ZS code.

BACKBONE

The segment of the network used as the primary path for transporting traffic between network
segments.

BANDWIDTH

A measure of the carrying capacity of a link, typically measured in bits or bytes per second a link
can carry.

BAUD RATE

Unit of signaling speed equal to the number of number of times per second a signal in a
communications channel varies between states. Baud is synonymous with bits per second (bps) if
each signal represents one bit.

BINARY

Numbering system that uses only zeros and ones.

BINDING

A collection of network configuration parameters, such as an IP address, associated with or
"bound to" a DHCP client. Bindings are managed by DHCP servers.

B

IPOLAR

An intelligence-carrying voltage that turns both negative and positive in relation to a base
reference of zero.
