Creating a Snapshot Container
You can create a snapshot of any type container, except a mirror set.
When you make a snapshot of a RAID-5 set, the fault tolerance of
the data is preserved.
While creating a snapshot container, user and application access to
the original container is not interrupted, although the create
snapshot operation slightly degrades performance during initial
writes to the original container.
To create a snapshot container (referred to as the backing container),
you must understand:

The create snapshot container attributes you can set

Understanding the Create Snapshot Container Attributes
You Can Specify
You use the
container create snapshot
command to create a
snapshot container. Before creating a snapshot container, consider
the following snapshot container attributes you can set:
■
compact mode
■
stripe size
■
safe mode
Specifying Compact Format When Creating a Snapshot Container
The
compact mode
attribute indicates whether to save the
snapshot container in compact format. A compact container uses a
smaller backing container than a non-compact mode snapshot
container.
A non-compact snapshot container is essentially the same size as the
original container. A compact snapshot container may be as small as
10MB, regardless of the size of the original container. Your decision
to use a compact or non-compact snapshot container should be
based on the number of write modifications you anticipate while
