OCR Voting Evaluator

The following sections describe the concept of the OCR Voting Evaluator and show
how to add and set up the evaluator. An evaluator is a locator engine that works on
the results of other locators. In the case of the OCR Voting Evaluator, the engine
works on the results of one or several Advanced Zone Locators.

Concept

Zonal OCR in fixed zones on a document is accomplished with the Advanced Zone
Locator, which reads the content of a zone character by character. Very often the
information on the form is difficult to read and results in errors or rejects during
OCR recognition.

A common way to improve OCR results is to use more than one OCR engine, or the
same OCR engine with different settings. The results of the two engines are then
compared by a so called voting step. The results of each engine are compared
character by character and the best result is used for the final field content.

Since the Advanced Zone Locator returns recognition results by character, with
confidences and alternatives, results can be compared at this level of detail. Voting is
not possible for other locator results.

Properties

The following sections describe how to set up the OCR Voting evaluator.

X

To add and configure an OCR Voting Evaluator

1

Select Show Extraction Design from the Mode toolbar.

2

If you have not already done so, define an Advanced Zone Locator before
adding the OCR Voting Evaluator. This locator must be in the list above the
evaluator since it needs to be executed first. Make sure that you have
identified the zones to be compared in the Advanced Zone Locator by
drawing two zones per required field, or by using the “Copy for Voting”
button in the property page of the Advanced Zone Locator.

3

Add a new OCR Voting Evaluator locator.

4

Display the properties dialog box to set up the parameters.

5

If necessary, select the General tab.
