About K2 appliances

A K2 appliance is a K2 shared storage client that extends the capabilities of the
standard K2 Media Client and K2 Media Server system. These capabilities typically
support a site’s specific workflow requirements, such as transcode or record/play of
formats not otherwise supported on a K2 system.

A K2 appliance typically uses a third party server platform, such as a Dell server. K2
appliance software components run on the server to provide shared storage access.
Other hardware and/or software components on the server provide the specific
appliance features.

Examples of K2 appliances are as follows:

• K2 ASI Media Client

• K2 Coder

• K2-scan

No Grass Valley license is required for the K2 Coder or the K2 ASI Media Client to
operate on a K2 SAN.

K2 appliance system requirements

To access K2 shared storage, a K2 appliance must have the following:

• A Gigabit Ethernet port for the control network.

• A Gigabit Ethernet port 100% dedicated to the media (iSCSI) network. No other

traffic may use this port. This port is configured by the K2 System Configuration
application. Do not manually configure network settings for this port.

• Quicktime software installed, version 7.0 or higher.

• K2 appliance software installed. This includes K2 system software and K2 media

file system (SNFS) software.

Other system requirements, such as I/O cards or software components, support the
specific appliance features.
