Fax glossary
The glossary explains the terms generally used for fax transmission.
The terms of the functions that are not stored for this machine are also explained.
Terms
Explanation
bps
This is an abbreviation of bit per second.
It means the amount of data sent in 1 second as the unit of data transmission.
ECM
(Error Correction Mode: Error correction mode)
Error resend mode of G3 communication. It confirms whether the data is correctly sent to the
recipient or not, and if it is not correctly sent, it communicates by resending the same data. If
the recipient is set for the ECM mode and the communication is done in ECM unless ECM off
is specified in this machine.
F-code
This is the communication procedure about the usage of the sub address of T.30* standardized
by ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union) provided by CIAJ (Communications and In-
formation network Association of Japan). In the communication between fax with F code func-
tion, various functions that uses F code can be used even if the maker is different. In this
machine, F code is used in the bulletin boards, relay request, relay transmissions, confidential
communication, password transmission. (*Communication standard)
G3
This is a fax communication mode standardized by the ITU-T (International Telecommunication
Union). The communication modes are G3 and G4. G3 is currently the most popularly used
mode.
LDAP
Abbreviation of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. A protocol to access the database that
can manage information concerned with the environment and the mail address of the user for
using the network through the TCP/IP network such as internet or intranet.
PB
Push telephone line
Super G3 (SG3)
This is a G3 communication mode standardized by ITU-T V. 34. The communication can be
carried out at a higher speed (high speed 33,400bps) than that of the usual G3 communication.
V. 34
This is a communication mode used at the time of fax communication of super G3. There are
cases when the communication is not possible in super G3 mode depending on the telephone
line conditions when the recipient’s machine/ own machine is connected to a telephone line via
private branch exchange. In such cases, it is recommended to communicate with super G3
mode is turned off by selecting the V. 34 OFF.
Z-Folded Original
This function first confirms the original size which cannot be detected correct original size due
to folds, then scans and sends after verifying the correct original size. This function can be used
only when the original is scanned by ADF.
Batch transmission
This is a function automatically sends one original at a specified time, if the transmission con-
ditions such as destination, sending time, memory transmission or resolution stored in the
same original memory.
Overseas commu-
nication
This is a function to communicate with an overseas recipient. If an overseas communication
mode is set, the fax is sent with a lower speed. Specifying an overseas TX ensures the fax
transmission when faxing to the location where transmission conditions are poor, even within
the country.
Resolution
This is a degree of details when scanning an original. The higher the resolution, the more de-
tailed the image is, and the more time (transmission time) transmitting takes. Select the appro-
priate resolution.
Memory RX
This is the function to store the received original in memory and to print if required.
Quick memory
transmission
This is the method to start sending of fax by scanning one page of the original at the same time.
Even in case of multiple originals, this is a function to send the original without overflowing the
memory.
Group
Grouping of the abbreviation No. of multiple groups. It is convenient when there are large num-
bers of reception of sequential broadcast and sequential polling in the same address.
Bulletin board
This function posts the original to be viewed, or stores the original to be transmitted through
polling.
Total # of Pages
Used for quick memory transmission to send the fax with the total number of pages. This allows
the recipient to check whether the all pages were received or not (In case of memory transmis-
sion, the total no. of pages are automatically added).
Consolidated origi-
nal
This is a function to detect and send the respective size of original by setting the original with
different sizes.
Resending
This is a function to resend the specific original stored in the memory that couldn’t be sent ei-
ther to same destination or to another destination.
Background Re-
moval
This is a function to send the original by adjusting the brightness of the background color of
the original.
Sharpness
This is a function to send an original by enhancing the edge of character.
