2.7. Licensing
Overview
To use cOS Core in a live environment, a cOS Core license file must be installed. A unique license
file is needed for each processor on which cOS Core runs.
The purpose of a license is to define what the capabilities and limitations a cOS Core installation
has. Such capabilities include parameters such as the number of VPN tunnels allowed and the
maximum number of routing tables.
For details about license pricing and purchase, contact a local Clavister sales office
Demonstration Mode
Without correct licensing, cOS Core will only operate for 2 hours from start up in demonstration
mode. After 2 hours, cOS Core will cease to function and will output a time expiry message to the
local console.
cOS Core must be restarted to enable it for a further 2 hour period and there is no limit on how
many times this can be done. The 2 hours allows a reasonable time for product evaluation. To
remove the limit, a valid license must be installed.
License Files
A cOS Core license consists of a single license file with filetype .lic. This is a text file that defines all
the cOS Core capabilities allowed by the license plus a digital signature to ensure the file cannot
be altered. License files can be opened and read in a normal text editor.
Installing a License
There are three methods for installing a license:
1.
Manually through the Web Interface or SCP
This consists of the following steps:
i.
In a web browser, go to the Clavister website
Clavister, log in and go to Licenses > Register License.
ii.
Select the option Register by Service Tag and Hardware Serial Number.
iii.
Enter the Serial Number and Service Tag codes then download a license to the
computer's local disk. For Clavister hardware products, these codes are found on a label
on the unit. The label also has a QR code containing the website and codes which can
be read by a mobile device.
iv.
The license file is uploaded to the security gateway through the cOS Core Web
Interface by going to Status > Maintenance > License and pressing the Upload
button to select the license file. Following upload, cOS Core will install the file.
Alternatively, the license file can be uploaded using SCP. cOS Core automatically
recognizes an uploaded license file but it is then necessary to manually to perform a
reconfigure or reboot operation to complete installation.
License installation must be done manually if the cOS Core installation has already had a
