Eclipse Configuration System
9.1 Important
Information
It is normally only necessary to uninstall a previous version of ECS as part of the
upgrade if moving between major versions i.e. from v3.0 to v4.0. Please refer to the
ECS manual (part 810299Z) for information on ECS installation.
It is essential that all configurations and layouts are saved and exported prior to
commencing the ECS upgrade process. Failure to do so will result in the TOTAL
LOSS OF ANY UNEXPORTED CONFIGURATIONS OR LAYOUTS.
IN SOME CASES IT MAYBE NECESSARY TO RE-BUILD YOUR
CONFIGURATION AFTER THE UPGRADE- SEE RELEASE NOTE FOR DETAILS.
ECS does not store version numbers in its configuration files. All it stores are tables
of data - each table has a name and a given set of data. The number of tables and
their contents varies by version of ECS. As you would expect, the greater the
difference in ECS version, the greater the difference in the number of tables and
their contents. When ECS imports a configuration file, a number of tables will be
missing, added or different and as such the import may succeed, partially succeed or
fail.
The optimal method for making a configuration file survive is to load it, stepwise,
from one ECS version to another; e.g. save from 4.0, load in 4.1, save from 4.1, load
into 4.2, save from 4.2, load into 5.0. This method is best because the difference
between what each version is saving and what the next version is expecting is
minimized; because the differences between each version are the smallest possible
and because each time the configuration is saved, it is saved in the new format.
Loading 4.2 maps into 5.0 is tested and known to succeed. 2.2 to 5.0 is known to fail;
in these cases, step-wise import/exports have to be performed.
