Troubleshooting
Guide

This chapter describes problems that may occur while the server is in use and
suggests solutions. It also explains how to run the Hardware Diagnostic
Program.

Troubleshooting

Identify problems by using these steps:

CAUTION: Before disconnecting any cables, switch off the server and
peripherals. If you disconnect the cables without switching off power, you
could cause irreparable damage to the server and peripherals.

1 Switch off the server and peripherals. Disconnect all the peripherals except

the keyboard and monitor.

2 Verify that the power cables of the server and monitor are connected to

properly grounded AC outlets.

3 Verify that the keyboard and monitor are correctly connected to the server.

4 Switch on the monitor and set the brightness and contrast to at least two

thirds of the maximum.

Refer to the monitor manual for details.

5 Verify that the diskette drive is empty, then switch on power.

6 Check that the server starts and that the POWER indicator glows. If the

POWER indicator does not light, see “POWER indicator does not light” on
page 130.

Once the server has started, the Power On Self Test (POST) determines whether
the problem is due to a defect of the system base board or keyboard, or to
incorrect settings.
