Glossary
Administrator
The person responsible for maintaining a computer network.
ADSI
Active Directory Service Interface. Under the Windows platform, enable system administrators to easily query for and
manipulate directory service objects, regardless of which network environment contains the resource.
allocation
A function of HP Access Control (HP AC) Job Accounting that allows information to be linked to print jobs.
architecture
The broad design of either hardware or software that defines the structure, capabilities, and limitations of the system.
case-sensitive
The ability of an operating system to distinguish between upper- and lower-case letters. For example, “A” would be
considered a completely different character than “a.” This is important to know when creating or entering a system
password.
client
An application that runs on a computer and relies on a server to perform some specific operation.
cluster
A designated collection of print servers (up to eight) that provide fault tolerance in a network. If the primary device in a
cluster fails, another will automatically take its place in order to prevent a disruption in service.
cookies
A small amount of data passed through a web browser from a web server and stored on the user’s computer as a text
file. Cookies are useful for informing the web server if the user has visited a site before, and allows for a more
customized data presentation.
data
Pieces of information formatted in a precise manner. Data is what computer programs produce and manipulate.
database
Essentially an electronic filing system, databases are a collection of information stored in a specific manner that enables
computer systems to quickly and easily retrieve them.
domains
A group of computer and peripheral devices bound by common rules within a network environment.
driver
A computer program that enables a computer to communicate with a peripheral device such as a printer, scanner, or
network card.
duplex
When referring to printers, duplex is the ability of some printers to print on both sides of a sheet of paper automatically.
exchange rate
A formula used to convert one nation's currency to another. Due to the ever-fluctuating world market, this rate can
change from day to day.
fixed address
Also sometimes referred to as a “static” address, fixed addresses do not change on their own after being assigned to a
computer or device. This differs from “dynamic” where addresses can automatically change as needed.
