8.11. Drive the bushings out of the axle assembly
using a hammer and drift. See Figure 8.11.
8.12. Inspect the spacer, bolt, axle assembly, and
steering knuckle. See Figure 8.12.
8.13. Replace any part that shows wear or damage.
NOTE: Whenever the bushings are removed
from the axle assembly, they should be replaced
with new ones.
NOTE: Replacing inexpensive components such
as the bolt, spacer, and bushings while they are
still serviceable will help prevent damage to
expensive components like the axle assembly
and steering knuckle.

8.14. To install the steering knuckle, reverse the
removal procedure.
NOTE: Lubricate the steering knuckle bushings,
spacer, and pivot bolt shoulder with lead-free
Alvania EPROO grease on installation
(P/N: 737-0168A 8fl. oz.).
NOTE: Tighten the nut on the steering knuckle
bolt to a torque of 80-95 ft-lbs.
NOTE: Tighten the nut that holds the tie rod end
to the steering knuckle to a torque of
80-95 ft-lbs.
NOTE: Use the grease zerk on the steering
knuckle to lubricate the steering knuckle pivot
point with grease after assembly.
9.
Front Axle Assembly Removal and Replace-
ment
9.1.
Remove the steering knuckle as described in the
“Steering Knuckle Removal and Replacement”
section of this manual.
NOTE: If the axle assembly is being removed
because it is damaged, the steering knuckle will
be removed for transfer to the new axle.
NOTE: If the axle is being removed to provide
clearance to remove the steering rack, the steer-
ing knuckle must be disconnected from the tie
rod end, but may be left attached to the axle
assembly.
9.2.
Remove the nut from the bolt that holds the bot-
tom of the spring and shock unit to the axle
using two 17mm wrenches. See Figure 9.2.
