NOTE: A condition in which the front measure-
ment is less than the rear measurement would
indicate toe-in.

NOTE: A condition in which the front measure-
ment is greater than the rear measurement
would indicate toe-out.

3.11. Make a table to keep track of adjustments and

results. See Figure 3.11.

3.12. If the total (sum of both side measurements)

string indicated toe angle is not between 1/4”
and 1/2” toe-in, adjust the length of the tie rods.

3.13. To adjust a tie rod end: Hold the tie rod end

using a 22mm wrench, and loosen the jam nut
with a second 22mm wrench. See Figure 3.13.

3.14. Thread the tie rods in or out of the tie rod ends

as necessary, using a 12mm wrench, to achieve
correct adjustment. See Figure 3.14.

3.15. First, adjust the tie rods to get the correct toe

measurement.

Both tie rods have right-hand threads.

Adjust tie rods in full turn or half turn increments
to make it easier to keep track of adjustments.

The steering rack is mounted behind the steer-
ing arms: lengthening the tie rods results in toe-
in.

Shortening the tie rods results in toe-out.

Adjusting the tie rod ends in equal amounts in
opposite directions (e.g..: left side out one turn,
right side in one turn) will shift the steering wheel
to the right.

3.16. After each adjustment, roll the Big Country back

and forth about 2’ to allow the adjustment to
over-come the friction between the tires and the
pavement, then check the adjustment.

3.17. Once the toe measurement is correct, insure

that the steering wheel is visually centered when
the Big Country is traveling straight ahead.

3.18. Tighten each jam nut using two 22mm

wrenches.

3.19. Test drive the Big Country to insure that the

steering wheel is true.
