Chapter 72 GLOSSARY
72-2
IEEE 802.1D
Specifies a general method for the operation of MAC bridges, including the Spanning Tree Protocol.
IEEE 802.1Q
VLAN Tagging—Defines Ethernet frame tags which carry VLAN information. It allows switches to assign
end-stations to different virtual LANs, and defines a standard way for VLANs to communicate across switched
networks.
IEEE 802.3ac
Defines frame extensions for VLAN tagging.
Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP)
A protocol through which hosts can register with their local router for multicast services. If there is more than
one multicast router on a given subnetwork, one of the routers is elected “querier” and assumes the
responsibility of keeping track of group membership.
IGMP Snooping
Listening to IGMP Query and IGMP Report packets transferred between IP Multicast Routers and IP Multicast
host groups to learn IP Multicast group members.
In-Band Management
Management of the network from a station attached directly to the network.
IP Multicast Filtering
A process whereby this switch can pass multicast traffic along to participating hosts.
Layer 2
Data Link layer in the ISO 7-Layer Data Communications Protocol. This is directly related to the hardware
interface for network devices and passes traffic based on MAC addresses.
Layer 3
Network layer in the ISO 7-Layer Data Communications Protocol. This layer handles the routing functions for
data moving from one open system to another.
Link Aggregation
See Port Trunk.
Management Information Base (MIB)
An acronym for Management Information Base. It is a set of database objects that contains information about
a specific device.
