Automatic Transmissron Operation
There are several dilterenr pqsitiqris for yaur shift lever.
PARK

This position lociis The rear wheels.
It's
the best position ta use when you start the engine
because your vehicle can’l move easily.
It is dangerous to
get
out of your vehicle
if
the
shift lever is not fully in PARK (P) with Ihe
parking brake firmly set. Your vehicle can roll.
Don't leave your vehicle when the engine is
running unless you have to. It you have left the
engine running, the vehicle can move suddenly^
You or others could be injured. To sure your
vehicle won't move, even when you’re on fairly
level ground, always set your parking brake and
move the shift lever to PARK (P). See “Shifting

If you have four-wheel drive^ your vehicle will
be free to roil = even if your shift lever Is
in PARK (P) — if your transfer case is In
MEUTRAI— So, be sura the transfer case is
in a drive gear — not in MEUTRAL. See

Ensure the shift fever is [ully in PARK (P) before starling
the engine. Vour vehicle has an auiomalic transmission
shffi lock С0Л1ГО1 system. You have to fully apply the
regular brakes before ydu can shift from PARK fP) wheri
the ignition key is in RUN If you cannot shift out of
PARK (P), ease pressure nn the shift lever, press ihe
button on the shift lever and push the shifi lever all
the way into PARK fP) as you Tnaintain brake
application. 'Mova the shrll lever Inlo Ihe gear you wish.
