MEUTRAL {M) to “rev'op" the engine and regain
forward momenlum. This won't work. Your vehk:le
will roll backwards very quickly and you could
go Out o! control.
Instead, apply the regular brake to slop the vehicie.
Then apply Ihe parking brake. Shift Id
REVERSE (R), release the parking brake, and
slowly back slrarghl down.

staiiii when going up a hill II the hill is steep
enough to stall yout vehicle, il's steep enough to
cause you to roll over if you turn around, if you can't
make it up Ihe hill, you must back slraighl down
the hill.
Q: Suppose, after sialling, I try to back down
the hill nnd decide I just can't do it.
What should I do?
A: Set the parking brake, put your transmission In
PARK (P) and turn off the engine. Leave the
vehtcle and go gel some help Exit on ihe uphilt
side and stay clear of Ihe path the vehicle would
take if it rolled dcwnhUt. Do not Shift the transfer
case to NELTRAL when you leave th-a vehicle.
Leave it in some gear.
A CAUTION;
Shitting the transfer case to NEUTRAL can
cause your vehicle to roll even if the
transmission is in PARK (P). This is because
the MEUTRAL positior^ an the transfer case
overrides the rransmission. You or someone
eise could be Injured. If you are going to leave
your vehicle, set the parking brake and shift
the transmission to PARK |P). But do not shift
the transfer case to NEUTRAL. Leave the
transfer case in the 2 Wheel High, 4 High or
4 Low position.
