For many years, add-un child restraints have used
the adult belt syslem In the vehicle. To help
reduce the chance of injury, Ihe child also has 1o be

secured wilhin the restraint, The vehicle's hett

system secures the add-on child restraint in Ihe

vehicle, and the add-on child restramfg harness
system hofds the child In place within the restraint.

One system, the three-point harness, has straps thai
come down over each of Ihe Infant's shoulders and
huchfe together at the crotch. The five-pamt harness
system has two shoulder straps, two hip straps and a
crotch strap. A shield may Jake the place of hip

straps. A T-shapad shield has shoulder straps lhat
are atlached to a tiai pad which resls low against the
child's biody. A shell- or armrest-lype shield has
straps that are attached to a wide, shelf'like shield
Ihat swings up or to the side.
