Leaving Your Vehicle With the Engine
Running

It can be dangerous to leave your vehicle with
the engine running. Your vehicle could move
suddenly If the stiHt lever not fully in

PARK {P| with the parking brake firmly set.

be free lo roll - even if your lever is ¡л
PARK (P) " it your transfer case is in
NEUTRAL. So be sure the transfer case

running, it could overheat and even catch fire.

yqur vehicle with the engine running unless

you have lo.

II you have lo leave your vehicle with the engine
running, be sure your vehicle is in PARK (P^ and your
parking brake is fiirnty set before you leave it. After

you've moved tha shilt lever inlo PARK (P), hold

the regular brake pedal down. Then, see if you can

move the sbitl lever away from PARK (P) without tir&t
pulling i| loward you (or pressing the -button on a console
shift Isver). If you can, il means that the shifi lever
wasn't fully locked into PARK (P).

Torque Lock

If you are parkirrg on a hill and you don't shift your

trsnsmission Into PARK (P) property, Ihe weight of the
vehicle imay pul too much force on the parking pawl

in ihe rransmissicin. Vou may lind 11 ditticuft to pull ihe

shill lever oul of PARK (P). This Is called "torque

lock " To prevent torque lock, set the parking brake and

then shift into PARK (P) properly before you leave

the driveKs seat. To find out how. see

When you are ready to drive, move the shift lever oul o1
PARK (P)

before

you release the parking brake.

It torque lock does occur, you may need to have anolher
vehicle push youns a little uphill to take some of ihe
pressure Irom the parking pawl in the Iransmissicm, so
you can pult the ahiit lever oul of PARK [P)
