5.2.3 Remote control (SNMP)
What is it SNMP?
The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) forms part of the internet protocol suite as
defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). SNMP is used in network management
systems to monitor network-attached devices for conditions that warrant administrative attention. It
consists of a set of standards for network management, including an Application Layer protocol, a
database schema, and a set of data objects. SNMP exists in three versions. Second version includes
in addition authentication and third version includes encryption. Most of current devices apply to
SNMP version two.
In communication by SNMP we have to differentiate between two sides – monitoring and monitored.
These parts can run on separate physic equipments or within one equipment. Monitored side is often
called as Agent and monitoring side is called Manager. On the monitoring side are collected
information about system state. Manager sends requests to Agent – mostly he requests some
information about system state. Agent provides reactions to requests from Manager.
Communication between Agent and Manager is often marked as SNMP operation.
OID alias Object Identifier is identificator, which is used for explicit identification of each value in
the SNMP communication. OID is created by numbers divided with points, where each point
represents one level of hierarchical structure of OID tree. Number identifications within separate
subtrees aren't unique and that's why is OID always sent as whole string. Each company and each its
product using SNMP management has its own international OID. MIB alias Management
Information Base is used for translation of OID strings into text, which can be more
understandable. MIB database can be completed by adding another MIB files.
Users
SNMP v3 is user oriented. User created within this part of configuration corresponds with USM (User
Security Model) in SNMP v3 and with community of other versions.
Authentication – Within this section you can define password and way of encryption for
authentication.
Protocol – For securing your password you can use methods MD5 or SHA.
Password – Here you have to enter password.
Privacy – Within this section you can define password and way of encryption for data transmission.
Protocol – For transmission securing you can use methods DES or AES.
