7.3. Common Shelf

Overview

The common shelf is MSAP2000’s most basic and crucial component, and
it is mounted upon a 19 or 23-inch rack. Each shelf provides 22 Module
slots. The Shelf is composed of a System backplane, and a metal
chassis. A dipswitch on the System backplane will allow the user to
determine the Node/Shelf type. Within a network composed by
MSAP2000, one Central Office Terminal (COT) can connect multiple
Remote Terminals (RTs) in various topologies, and each node can
accommodate one Main shelf and up to seven extension shelves.

Slots 1~16 of the shelf are used to accommodate Modules with electric
interfaces, or Modules which fits into the front panel. Slots 17~18 are for
Modules that do not require backside cable outlets. Slots 19~20 are for
control Modules, and slots 21~22 are for power Modules.

Ports on the back of the Shelf include two sets of DC power inputs, an
external clock input, an alarm input, a test input, and a module electrical
interface. These take the form of wire-wrap posts, for convenient
maintenance.
