Recording Key Functions

To record a key sequence, follow these steps:

1. Press the Record key. The R? symbol is displayed on the status row.

2. Press the PF key to which you want to assign the key sequence. If no playback sequence is

already stored on this PF key, R is displayed on the operator status row. If a playback
sequence is already stored on this PF key, R?+ is displayed and an alarm sounds.

3. If the PF key already has a key sequence stored on it, press the Record key to terminate the

record operation without changing the sequence already recorded on this PF key or press
the new key sequence to overwrite the old sequence with the new sequence.

4. If the PF key does not have a key sequence stored on it, enter the key sequence to be stored.

5. Press the Record key to end the record session. The R is no longer displayed on the status row.

Note: The Extended Select key cannot be recorded as the last function in a recorded sequence.
This prevents you from recording sequences that terminate the record operation and leave the
display station in Extended Select mode.

Timing Considerations

Recording sequences that contain AID keys, such as the Enter key or a PF key, may cause
timing problems between the host and the LINCS node. The Record/Playback feature attempts
to compensate for these problems by watching for an indication of when the host is ready to
receive data. The host displays a clock symbol on the status row to warn you that you must
wait before recording additional keystrokes. When the clock or clocks are removed, you can
resume recording keystrokes.

Because systems vary, the clock symbol may be posted and removed a number of times during
a transaction. The Record/Playback feature works effectively in environments where the host
updates occur a fixed number of times. When the clock is displayed at random or variable
intervals, or when the host accepts keys between clocks, the played back sequences that contain
AID keys may not perform as expected. This usually happens because the host updates are not
consistent with the number of clock events that occur. When this happens, press the Pause key
during record to suspend playback and give the host time to process the AID key function.

Pausing During Record Operation

You can press the Pause key to temporarily stop the record operation. The pause symbol is
displayed. The playback operation will pause when the Pause key is played back. During the
pause, you can enter keys from the keyboard that are not included in the record operation. To
return to the record operation, press the Pause key again.
