7. CUT Device Support
A Control Unit Terminal (CUT) device is one that relies on LINCS to process it’s keystrokes
and host data streams. Since LINCS is in charge of all the datastream and keystroke processing,
a wide range of features is available for these CUT devices. CUT devices include Network
Devices which may be LAN attached to the LINCS node, as well as Direct Devices which
may be coax or asynchronously attached.
CUT devices may be connected to either 3270 or ASCII hosts, or to no host at all. The full
range of 3270 and ASCII Host Connectivity features which were described in previous sections
is available to all CUT devices. Also, since all keystroke information from CUT devices is
forwarded to LINCS, many other features are available as described in a subsequent section
titled “CUT Device Features”.
Configuration and Management
This section outlines the Configuration and Management which is common to both Network
and Direct Devices. Subsequent sections will discuss any Configuration which is specific to
the device type.
Configuration
• The Device Options utilities define global parameters which are valid for all devices attached
to the LINCS node.
• The Device Profiles define characteristics for “groups” of devices. All devices may use the
same Device Profile if desired, thus eliminating the need to configure this information for
each device.
• Device Profile Assignments assign Device Profiles and specific host assignments to all
configured devices.
• Printer Assignments assign local printers to devices. Refer to the section titled “Local
Printing” for more details.
Management
The Device Menu in Central Control Mode contains utilities that are useful in managing devices
attached to your LINCS node. Please refer to this Menu in the Central Control document for
further details.
Network Devices
Workstations and printers attached to LINCS by a LAN are termed Network Devices. A
workstation can be a PC running terminal emulation software, such as LANSYS , or a DECnet
LAT display, or a TELNET terminal. Supported printers include LPD and TCP.
LANSYS
LANSYS lets Token Ring and Ethernet attached PCs emulate CUT-mode terminals. All LINCS
CUT features are available to the LANSYS clients including the popular 1472-style emulation.
LANSYS can be used in place of other commercially available 3270 emulation packages that
