not be recognized until a response is received, or until a time out occurs. If multiple ping
requests are selected, the average response time is displayed in milliseconds. If there is no
response, or only one ping request is selected, then N/A will displayed in the average response
time field.
The function keys for the Ping panel are described below:
• 1–Menu – Return to the Host Connection Menu.
• 3–Return – Return to the TCP/IP Connect Panel.
• 4–Clear – Clear the data in the Response field.
• 6–Retry – This function key is available when the last ping command selected an IP
Host using one of the IP Host Classes. If selected, LINCS will attempt the last ping
command again.
ASCII Host Connectivity
ASCII Host connectivity is achieved using TCP/IP, or Asynchronous ASCII protocols. The
following sections discuss how these protocols related to host connections, plus the features
offered in ASCII host sessions.
ASCII Host Protocols
Asynchronous
Asynchronous ASCII hosts can be attached to a LINCS node using ASCII Device Adapters.
All CUT-type devices can gain access to ASCII hosts.
Asynchronous Hosts Configuration and Management
Configuration – This section defines the Configuration utilities that define Asynchronous
host connections. The Asynchronous Host Menu in Configuration (Submenu List) may also
be used to guide you through these utilities.
The ASCII Port Options panel is displayed if any ASCII Ports are defined on the Product
Definition panel, and is used to designate the desired Asynchronous ports as host ports.
The ASCII Host Classes utility groups ASCII Host ports into classes and assigns names to the
classes. Defining classes provides a user-friendly and secure method of allowing dynamic
connections to ASCII Hosts.
Refer to ASCII Host Connectivity under heading 1.2.7.1 for a description of other ASCII Host
configuration utilities.
Management – The ASCII Event Log displays a list of the ASCII ports, along with summary
counters of any errors that have occurred.
TCP/IP
TCP/IP host connections provide TELNET, TN3270, DNS, and LPD and TCP print servers
attachment for CUT displays and direct attached printers. SNA may be encapsulated using the
Switch-to-Switch Protocol (SSP) described in RFC 1434 for interoperability with IBM’s 6611.
