13. IP Channel Bridge
The IP Channel Bridge feature provides a means to pass IP traffic between the channel and
one or more LAN interfaces. IP traffic is bridged, other protocols are filtered out.
All protocols that ride on IP are passed between the LAN and the host. The channel and LAN
adapters that are used by this feature are the same as those used by other features, but must be
dedicated to the IP Channel Bridge feature when configured for it. Other protocols and features
will not be allowed on the same cards with the exception of the Coax/Ethernet Bridge feature.
The IP channel feature interfaces to the IP stacks running on the host. These may belong to
IBM, Interlink, Connectivity Solutions or possibly some other vendor.
LINCS uses a standard 3088 (CTC) emulation on the host channel.
Up to four LAN adapters can be dedicated to the same channel interface. Any or all of the
channel interfaces can be configured to support the IP traffic. No two channel interfaces can
be configured to bridge to the same LAN card.
IP Channel Bridge Applications
Prime applications for the IP Channel Bridge feature include:
• Providing data transfers between Unix and mainframe environments.
• Allow FTP file transfers between PC-based clients and the host.
• Support for TN3270 clients to TN3270 Server that runs on the host IP stack
• Provide access to Internet users
Configuration and Management
The IP Channel Bridge feature requires the IP Channel Bridge Feature Activation Disk on the
1174 product line or the IP Channel Bridge personality on the 9300 product line.
All channel and LAN cards used by the IP Channel Bridge feature are dedicated to this feature
and are not used for any other LINCS feature, with one exception. One Ethernet card can be
configured to support both the IP Channel Bridge feature and the Coax to Ethernet Bridge
feature.
No additional memory or processors are required.
Configuration of the IP Channel Bridge feature is accomplished by setting the protocol for the
channel to CTC and the protocol of the LAN card to IP Bridge. A pair of gateway circuits are
defined to pair the channel interface to the LAN interface.
It is possible to reduce the amount of traffic onto the channel by configuring an ARP filter. The
purpose of the ARP filter is to filter out all ARPs that are not directed to the host. You must
configure the IP address of the host into this ARP filter to inform LINCS which address to
pass. This configuration is on the Gateway Circuits panel.
