Chapter 10. Management Features

Two methods can be used to upgrade the microcode level of LINCS. One method is to copy
LINCS microcode from an existing machine onto your FTP client, then distribute it to another
LINCS platform. A second method is to load microcode directly onto your FTP client, then
distribute it to another LINCS platform. In each case it is recommended that you upgrade from
a lower microcode level to a higher level.

Before copying the new files to LINCS it is recommended that you use the backup instruction
for making a backup copy of your current LINCS configuration, just in case you have a problem
resulting in an incomplete transfer.

LINCS Backup Procedure

To backup all system microcode and configuration files do the following steps

1.

Use your FTP client to connect and logon to the LINCS FTP server using the “BACKUP”
user name and the supervisor password.

2.

Issue the FTP client’s SITE command with the parameter “BACKUPSYS” in order
to copy the system files to the backup directory. This command will take approximately
three minutes to complete. Take notice if the command completed successfully
(response of: “command ok”). From a Windows 95 FTP client, the command is
“quote site backupsys”.

3.

Quit and disconnect from the FTP server.

Transferring New Microcode to LINCS

1.

Create a new subdirectory on your FTP client’s hard drive, and copy the 3 System disks
into this directory (System 1, System 2, and System 3 disks). If you obtain them in zipped
format, remember to extract the files into your directory. If you copy the zipped files into
the directory, you should remove the original zipped files after extraction, before continuing.

2.

Use your FTP client to connect and logon to the LINCS FTP server using the “MERGE”
user name and the supervisor password.

3.

Use the appropriate FTP client command to select “IMAGE” data type, “FILE” file
structure and “STREAM” transfer mode. (This usually done by selecting “binary”
file transfer.)

4.

Use the appropriate FTP client commands to transfer all the files contained in your FTP
subdirectory to the current working directory of the LINCS FTP server.

5.

If all files were transferred successfully, then issue the FTP client’s SITE command with
the parameter “MERGE” in order to transfer the microcode from the current directory to
the main system directory (“quote site merge”). This command will take approximately
two minutes to complete. Take notice if the command completed successfully (“command
ok” response).

At this point, if the SITE command completed successfully, the merge process is complete. It
is necessary to IML the LINCS platform before the microcode can be put into use. You may
choose to IML the LINCS platform using any one of the following methods:

• Issue the Site IML command (“quote site iml”) to LINCS.

• Have somebody manually press the IML button on the front of the LINCS platform.

• Using Telnet or some other method, force an IML from Central Control Mode, using the

proper utility behind the Supervisor Functions Menu.
