6. 3270 Server Features
IPX SNA Server
LINCS IPX SNA Server feature provides SNA IBM mainframe connectivity to LAN-attached
workstations running NetWare for SAA compatible 3270 terminal emulation products. The
mainframe may be attached by any means currently available to LINCS, for example: SDLC,
Local Channel, Token Ring, or Ethernet. The LAN workstations may be attached through any
LAN board supporting the IPX protocol. Multiple LAN boards are supported in one LINCS
node.
The client workstation must be running a Netware for SAA compatible 3270 terminal emulator.
The workstation connection to LINCS can be Token Ring or Ethernet. The clients will appear
to the SNA host as Type PU 2.0 devices, and can establish type LU1, LU2 and LU3 type
sessions with an SNA or APPN host.
Competitive Analysis
LINCS Advantages: The advantages of LINCS IPX SNA Server over PC-based NetWare for
SAA Server are:
• LINCS runs on hardware that is generally more robust than PC hardware.
• LINCS provides a greater range of host connectivity than a PC running NetWare for SAA
• A LINCS node supports more client sessions, and more host connections than a NetWare
for SAA Server.
• Adding IPX SNA Server to LINCS is simpler and less time consuming than installing
Novell SAA Server.
Differences from NetWare for SAA: LINCS does not support the following :
• PU2.1 host connection
• LU0, LU6.2
• TCP/IP or AppleTalk
• NetWare Communication Services Manager
• User names or passwords
