Chapter 6. 3270 Server Features
707021-001
When there are no DNS servers in the network, the SMS server’s IP address is configured into
the client’s platforms as if it were the DNS server. A second SMS server is recommended for
fault-tolerance reasons. With no real DNS server available, the SMS server will resolve the
DNS request for the TN3270 session directly back to the requesting client.
Once a TN3270 service domain name has been resolved to the client, the client will attempt to
make a connection to the TN3270 server. All subsequent traffic is handled by the TN3270
server. Thus, user performance is not affected by use of the SMS feature, and the only observable
impact may be at connection time.
The SMS server polls the list of TN3270 servers (SMS clients) identified by the list of IP
addresses in all of the SMS Server Definitions panels my making a TCP connection to port
5000 on each of the TN3270 servers. The TN3270 servers will respond by sending the session
and connection availability data over the TCP connection. The rate at which the servers are
polled is configurable. Port 5000 must not be configured for any other use on the LINCS
platform, in order to make use of SMS.
TN3270E Server Configuration and Management
Configuration - The following Configuration utilities enable the TN3270E Server feature.
The “TN3270 Server Menu” in Configuration(Submenu List) may be used to guide you through
these configuration utilities.
• 3270 Host Circuits must be defined to use the TN3270 Server feature. Refer to the
Configuration and Management section for 3270 Host Connectivity for details of configuring
Host Circuits.
• Line Options - Use the Line Options utility to enable the TCP/IP protocol on the line(s)
that will communicate with the TN3270 Clients. If enabled, a “TCP/IP Line Options” panel
will be displayed, to define your TN3270 Client Connections along with other TCP/IP line
parameters.
• TCP/IP Options - This utility contains global TN3270 Server Options, including the option
that determines whether LINCS will act as a TN3270E or a TN3270 server.
• TN3270 Client Definitions - This utility defines specific information about your TN3270
Clients and the LUs which they will be using. This panel also determines which TCP ports,
LINCS will be listening on for TN3270 clients. Both, specific and pooled LU resources are
assigned to TN3270 clients on this panel.
Management - The following Central Control Mode utilities are available:
• The TCP/IP Menu contains utilities useful in determining the status of your TCP/IP lines.
• The Display/Update 3270 LU Connections utility on the Device Menu displays all configured
3270 LUs, and indicates whether or not the LUs are owned by TN3270 Clients. The LUs
may be disconnected using this utility.
• The Refresh LU nickname file utility on the Media Management menu allows you to change
the LU Nickname file while online, allowing you to modify which users have access to
which resources.
• The SMS Server Data panel allows you to monitor the number of TN3270 users and the
number of available TN3270 sessions, when you have the SMS feature enabled.
