Chapter 5. Host Connectivity

The TCP/IP Print Server Classes defines the Print Server classes. These classes are assigned
to printer sessions using the Device Profiles and/or the Device Profile Assignments utilities.

LPD Print Server

LINCS provides an RFC1179 compliant LPD print server that can direct network print requests
to directly connected print resources. Prints can be spooled to either coax or ASYNC ASCII
printers. This feature can help to consolidate costly print resources. The LPD protocol requires
a client and server relationship that utilizes TCP/IP. The client is considered the LPR and the
server provides the print services and is called the LPD. When the LPR requires print services
it will initiate a TCP connection with the LPD.

LPD will allow users on a TCP/IP network to request ASCII print services and spooling
functions on LINCS platform system printers. This allows LAN users to utilize existing print
resources that also can be used to perform local, LU3, LU1 and host copy prints.

Multiple TCP/IP LAN print servers may be defined for a single LINCS platform. Some or all
of the servers may be LPD servers. Each line with TCP/IP protocol enabled may be assigned
one or more LPD servers. Each LPD server has a print queue name associated with it. Each
LPD server is capable of serving multiple clients concurrently. The number of clients is limited
by the maximum connections allowed. This value is configurable per queue name. The
maximum number of connections is also limited to a maximum number of connections per
line for all LAN devices.

Each LPD server print queue must be assigned to one or more directly attached system printer
sessions and allows multiple logical sessions to be supported on these printers. The LPD
server may also be assigned to coax host addressable printer sessions but not ASCII host
addressable printer sessions. The LPD server print queue cannot be assigned to any LAN
printers sessions.

The amount of memory allocated for LPD Server is limited only by the amount of memory in
the LINCS device.

LPD Print Server Management

Management – The Display/Update LPD Queues utility on the Central Control utilities Device
Menu manages the LPD print queues.

Central Control provides a utility that allows the system operator to view the status of each
LPD print queue and to delete any print job.

ASCII Host Features

LINCS’ ASCII Host feature enables you to integrate ASCII hosts, display stations, and printers
into a 3270 environment. The feature utilizes ASCII ports on a LINCS node that can be
designated as a host port. An ASCII port configured for ASCII host lets you use coax displays
or ASCII displays to communicate with an ASCII host.

ASCII Host Prints

LINCS allows a printer, either ASCII or coax, to have ASCII host sessions. There can be up to
ten sessions per device, with one or more being an ASCII host. When the printer powers on,
LINCS will establish sessions with each of the hosts.
