][Glossar

Absolute encoder

Encoder that provides an absolute value for each position. The absolute

value corresponds directly to the position of the detected machine compo-

nent.

Brake chopper

See brake resistor

Brake resistor

Resistor that converts electrical energy into thermal energy, generated

when a motor is braked.

Common mode voltage

Disturbance amplitude, which an analogue input (differential input) can cor-

rect.

Commutation

Method of supplying power to the motor

Continuous output of brake re-

sistor

Mean power that can be converted within the brake resistor.

Current regulator

Regulates the difference between the current setpoint and the actual value

to 0, output: Voltage setpoint.

Earth fault

Electrical connection between a phase and PE

Enable

Enable signal for the servo amplifier, hardware enable via 24 V signal, soft-

ware enable via the commissioning software, a fieldbus or permanently set.

Both are required for the enable.

Encoder

Generic term for incremental encoder and absolute encoder. Optical or

magnetic transducer, which detects the current position of a motor shaft or

drive unit and converts it into an electrical signal.

Gray code

Special form of binary representation, in which only one binary digit chang-

es from one code word to the next.

Holding brake

Holds the position of the motor when the power is removed. May only be

used when the motor is at standstill.

I

Effective value of continuous current

I

²

t threshold

Monitoring the actual demand on effective current I

Incremental encoder

Sensor for detecting linear or rotational positional changes. Path, speed

and direction can be determined by evaluating the number of pulses, pulse

frequency and phase position.

Intermediate circuit

Smooths the still undulating, rectified supply voltage to the servo amplifier;

also used as an energy store (with feedback for example).
