Modify the master hosts file

Modify the master hosts file

Use the following steps to modify the master hosts file. The master hosts file is
maintained and copied to all networked devices in the Open SAN Shared Storage
system as well as other Profiles and UIMs in the facility and is used for name
resolution. In this procedure, you’ll add the IP addresses and host names for all UIMs.
After modifying the master hosts file, you must copy it to all networked devices in the
Open SAN system, as well as other Profile platforms and UIMs in the facility.

If you are deploying a UIM-SAN-FCIP in an existing Open SAN system, you may
have to modify all Profile XP platform host names to meet the host naming
requirements described in

“Specify host names in the Open SAN” on page 82

. If this

is the case, you also need to modify the Profile XP hostname entries in the master host
file.

About UIM-SAN-FCIP host name aliasing

Host name aliasing in the hosts file is used to assign the UIM-SAN-FCIP as the Fibre
Channel IP streaming interface for the Profile XP platforms in the Open SAN system.
Aliasing is accomplished in the hosts file by assigning multiple host names to the
same IP address, in this case, the UIM-SAN-FCIP Fibre Channel network interface
IP addresses. To assign the UIM-SAN-FCIP as the Fibre Channel interface, aliases
for each Profile platform in the Open SAN must be added using a strict naming
convention as shown below.

Referring to the example Open SAN system on

page 88

, you would add the following

entries to the master hosts file:

192.168.100.157

SAN1_UIM1 SAN1_XP1_UIMFC

SAN1_XP2_UIMFC

192.168.230.157

SAN1_UIM1_FC0 SAN1_XP1_FC0 SAN1_XP2_FC0

From this example, you can see that the UIM-SAN-FCIP control LAN network
interface mapped to the UIM hostname SAN1_UIM1 is also known by the aliases
SAN1_XP1_UIMFC, and SAN1_XP2_UIMFC. Also, the UIM-SAN-FCIP streaming
LAN network interface mapped to SAN1_UIM1_fc0 is also known by its aliases
SAN1_XP1_fc0, and SAN1_XP2_fc0. With these settings, SAN1_XP1 and
SAN1_XP2 will both proxy their transfer requests to SAN1_UIM1.
