UIM Instruction Manual

Chapter 7 Information for application developers

In addition, the UIM supports the generation of MXF streams that conform to SMPTE
385M, the format used by the Sony e-VTR. To generate such a stream, add the
?D10AES3 option to the UML, as shown in this example.

get /explodedFile/EXT:/default/clip1?D10AES3 clip1.mxf

This command generates an MXF stream in the SMPTE 385E format and stores it as
an MXF file.

When generating such a stream, the clip must be in the MPEG D10 format, at 30, 40,
or 50 Mb/sec. Audio must be recorded in 24-bit PCM format. The stream will contain
eight audio channels. If the original clip included fewer than eight channels, the
missing channels are added by the UIM, but contain no audio data.

No option is required when the UIM receives a stream in the SMPTE 385M format.
The UIM detects this format and decomposes the AES3 audio in the stream into eight
24-bit PCM audio channels for storage on the Profile video server’s file system.

A sample MXF session

The following illustrates a command session that transfers a clip named EXT:/default/
clip1
on a standalone Profile XP video server to a file named clip1.mxf, then sends the
file back to the Profile video server as a clip named EXT:/default/clip1_back.
Application developers can use this example to understand how to transfer clips to
and from a Profile video server via FTP.
