About load balancing when multiple UIM-SAN-GEIPs are used

About load balancing when multiple UIM-SAN-GEIPs are used

There can be multiple UIM-SAN-GEIPs deployed in an Open SAN Shared Storage
system. The number of UIM-SAN-GEIPs needed is determined by a combination of
the following requirements: the number of simultaneous transfer streams; transfer
performance.

When multiple UIM-SAN-GEIPs are used, host name aliasing is used in the hosts file
to assign the UIM-SAN-GEIPs to the Profile XP platforms in the Open SAN for
proper load balancing. Referring to the example system on

page 51

, SAN1_UIM1

handles transfer requests for Profiles SAN1_XP1 and SAN1_XP2 while SAN1_UIM2
handles transfer requests for SAN1_XP3 and SAN1_XP4. To accomplish this, the
following entries are added to the master host file.

192.168.100.157

SAN1_UIM1 SAN1_XP1_UIM SAN1_XP2_UIM

192.168.100.158

SAN1_UIM2 SAN1_XP3_UIM SAN1_XP4_UIM

192.168.200.157

SAN1_UIM1_he0 SAN1_XP1_he0 SAN1_XP2_he0

192.168.200.158

SAN1_UIM2_he0 SAN1_XP3_he0 SAN1_XP4_he0

NOTE: Multiple UIM-SAN-GEIPs do not provide automatic failover capability. If
a UIM-SAN-GEIP becomes unavailable, transfer requests will fail for all Profile
platforms assigned to it.
