Chapter 4 UIM-SAN-GEIP Installation: Grass Valley Open SAN System
Specify redundant FC SCSI switch fabric topology
In failover-configured Open SANs that have redundant Fibre Channel SCSI fabrics,
the fabric topology must be configured in a particular way to assure correct failover
performance. This topology is often custom-specified for individual Open SANs; as
appropriate, this specification should be sought and followed.
In general, given redundant SCSI fabrics A and B, follow this fabric topology:
• The A ports for all Profile XP systems and RAID chassis are connected to the A
fabric domain.
• The B ports for all Profile XP systems and RAID chassis are connected to the B
fabric domain.
• The UIM-SAN-GEIPs do not have redundant Fibre Channel SCSI ports. You
should split the attachment of multiple UIM-SAN-GEIPs between the A and B
domains.
• Domain numbers are assigned to each Fibre Channel switch such that any
A-domain value is less than any B-domain value.
This topology provides the following failover behavior:
• Each Fibre Channel client, including the UIM-SAN-GEIPs, will discover in
order the A, then B RAID controllers.
• The UIM-SAN-GEIPs will select a single, stable, predictable path to the
redundant RAID controllers.
• In the event of a RAID controller failure, a UIM-SAN-GEIP, after rebooting if
necessary, will find the alternate path to the RAID chassis.
• In the event of a Fibre Channel switch failure, the UIM-SAN-GEIP not
primarily connected to the failed switch will continue to function, though it may
first require rebooting.
Rack-mount the UIM
Use the instructions in the Rack Installation Guide provided with the Dell Server
documentation set to mount the UIM in a standard 19 inch equipment rack. You can
also refer to the Dell Server Installation and Troubleshooting Guide to make power
cord, mouse, keyboard, and monitor connections at this time. Do not make network
connections at this time.
CAUTION: Do not connect Fibre Channel connection at this time.
