Material Exchange Format

This version of the UIM supports transfers of clips in the Material Exchange Format
(MXF).

UIM transfers only simple clips (not complex movies) in the MXF format. It does so
using Operation Pattern 1a of the MXF standards.

MXF transfers through the UIM are supported via FTP only, and not through the
Profile API.

Supported MXF standards

The following standards are supported in whole or in part by the UIM:

About UMIDs

The UIM extracts the clip UMID and saves it as part of the movie description when
it converts an MXF stream into a Profile video server movie.

When the UIM creates an MXF stream from a Profile movie, it generates a UMID for
the clip if no UMID was saved with the clip. However, this UMID is not added to the
Profile movie description. Therefore, if the same clip is transferred more than once, it
will receive a different UMID each time.

About Metadata

The UIM inserts MXF metadata differently according to its type. Similarly, upon
receiving an MXF stream, the UIM uses metadata in different ways.

Structural metadata

Structural metadata describe how material is included in the MXF stream.
Information such as the clip name, In and Out points, number of audio tracks, and
similar clip definition information are considered structural metadata.
