Communicating with Metrohm NIRSystems XDS Instruments

To communicate with a Metrohm NIRSystems XDS instrument, the user must have Vision software on
a computer capable of supporting it. That means, if the operating system is Windows 98 – NT 4.0,
the computer must have a minimum of 256 Mb RAM or if the operating system is Windows 2000 –
XP there must be a minimum of 512 Mb RAM.

How the Communication works

When an XDS instrument is powered-up (turned on) it looks for a dynamic IP address from a DHCP
(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Server.

If a DHCP Server is available, the IP address is assigned dynamically and communication between the
computer and the instrument begin.

If a DHCP Server is not available, after a period of inactivity the instrument will time-out and a fixed

Use a standard Ethernet cable.

available, the user is responsible to make sure the IP address of the computer where Vision resides is
compatible with the IP address of the instrument. (169.254.0.2). If not, Metrohm has a protocol (see
attachment Changing the IP Address) to change the IP address within the instrument for
