13 Remote-Copy Links

Remote-copy links are divided into two main types: sending links and receiving links.

You create links during remote-copy setup by using either the creatercopytarget command
or the admitrcopylink command.

For more information, see

“Setting Up a Unidirectional Configuration” (page 76)

.

When you create a link, it becomes both a sending and receiving link for the port specified in the
command.

Sending Links

HP 3PAR Remote Copy uses sending links to transmit data from a system to its remote-copy target
system (the other system in the remote-copy pair).

When you create target definitions for a system during setup, define a minimum of one pair of
links for each target system.

For redundancy, configure more than one communication network between the two storage systems
in each remote-copy pair, so that replication can continue even if one of the networks fails.

RCFC supports up to 32 links between a pair of 8-node storage systems.

RCIP supports up to eight links between a pair of 8-node storage systems.

When all links between two systems are active, all links carry data.

In other words, HP 3PAR Remote Copy sends the data for one I/O over a single link, but can send
the data for another I/O over another link. This versatility is especially useful when you are copying
multiple volumes.

For each configured IP interface, HP 3PAR Remote Copy uses TCP port 5785 to transmit data and
commands from the primary system over the sending link to the backup system.

One Sending Link per Node per Target

You can configure one sending link per node per target system.

For example, if you have a System1/System2 remote-copy pair, each with nodes x and y (

Figure 32

(page 103)

), you can configure two sending links in either of the following configurations:

From node x1 to node x2, and from node y1 to node y2, or

From node x1 to node y2, and from node y1 to node x2
