from the electrolyte. If the rate of evaporation exceeds the rate of addition,
causing the level to drop below the red marker, open MV3 one-half turn to
increase the rate of addition, and repeat, if necessary.
NOTE: Open MV3 slowly. Adding all of the water all at once may cause a
short period of instability in sensor output.
If, for some reason, the automatic addition of water cannot be adjusted, water
may be added manually by the procedure outlined below.
Purging Distilled Water
Before you add water to the electrolyte, you should purge the water with
nitrogen using the fritted glass tube (P/N T1052) provided in the Accessory Kit.
This will facilitate the removal of residual oxygen by Ultra Trace sensor
sparging. If water is added to the Ultra Trace sensor electrolyte without having
been purged, the analyzer will output a signal equivalent to 3–5 PPM of oxygen,
which will decrease slowly as the dissolved oxygen is removed by sparging the
electrolyte with nitrogen. This process may take from 24 to 48 hours to
complete.
To add distilled water to the electrolyte in the Ultra Trace sensor:
1. Remove the cadmium anode from the stainless steel plate on the top
of the Ultra Trace sensor body (see Figure 3-5) and store in the
holder in which it was shipped.
2. Insert the tube attached to the 50 cc syringe (P/N B51752) provided
into the bottle containing the purged water. Fill the syringe by
pulling out on the plunger carefully.
3. Insert the tube attached to the syringe into the Ultra Trace sensor
through the opening on the stainless steel plate mounted on the top
of the Ultra Trace sensor body. Add the water slowly from the
syringe into the Ultra Trace sensor.
NOTE: Avoid spilling water on the stainless steel plate. If any water gets
on the stainless steel plate wipe it dry with a tissue paper.
4. Add distilled water to the electrolyte until the electrolyte level is just
below the green marker on the front of the Ultra Trace sensor body.
DO NOT add water above the green level marker.
5. Reinsert the anode into the sensor. Make sure it is firmly secured on
the stainless steel plate.
