Point-to-point Configuration

This chapter introduces point-to-point connections.

4.1 Point-to-point Connection Overview

You can set up point-to-point connections between two ZyXEL Devices. These connections
offer a cost-effective, high-speed connection for high-bandwidth applications such as
videoconferencing and distance learning. An example is shown below. (This figure is the same
as the one in

Figure 2 on page 42

.)

In a point-to-point connection, the DSL ports on the ZyXEL Devices are directly connected to
each other, not to an ISP or the Internet. The connection can use RFC 1483 in bridge mode or
ENET ENCAP in router mode, and the ZyXEL Devices must use the same VPI, VCI,
multiplexing, and encapsulation method.

Note: A point-to-point connection can use RFC 1483 in bridge mode or ENET

ENCAP in router mode.

To establish a point-to-point connection, one of the ZyXEL Devices becomes the server
(normally, the ISP). The server controls some of the attributes of the DSL connection, such as
the transfer rate and the DSL operational mode. Otherwise, there is no difference between the
server and the client. Both of them can establish the point-to-point connection.

You can only establish point-to-point connections between ZyXEL Devices that support this
kind of server/client mode.
