Chapter 1 Getting To Know Your ZyXEL Device
When the firewall is on, all incoming traffic from the Internet to the your network is blocked
unless it is initiated from your network. This means that probes from the outside to your
network are not allowed, but you can safely browse the Internet and download files.
Use content filtering to block access to web sites containing keywords that you specify. You
can define time periods and days during which content filtering is enabled and include or
exclude particular computers on your network from content filtering. For example, you could
block access to pornographic web sites or block access to some types of web sites during the
workday.
Use bandwidth management to efficiently manage traffic on your network by giving priority
to certain types of traffic and/or to particular computers. For example, you could make sure
that Voice over Internet calls get enough bandwidth in your network and, at the same time,
limit the amount of bandwidth available for large file downloads.
1.1.2 High-speed Point-to-point Connections
Use two ZyXEL Devices to create a cost-effective, high-speed connection for high-bandwidth
applications such as videoconferencing and distance learning.
Figure 2 Point-to-point Connections with Your ZyXEL Device
The ZyXEL Devices provide a simple, fast point-to-point connection between two
geographically-dispersed networks. Set up each ZyXEL Device as a router or as a bridge,
depending on the desired configuration. If you set up a ZyXEL Device as a router, you can use
features such as firewall, content filtering and bandwidth management. If you set up a ZyXEL
Device as a bridge, you can minimize the configuration changes you have to make in your
existing network.
