Troubleshooting
This chapter describes methods of isolating a PDR200 or PAC208/216 fault to a field
replaceable unit (FRU), also called replaceable part. FRUs, listed in Chapter 6, are
parts which can be replaced in the field usually without much difficulty If you
determine that a part must be replaced, refer to “Parts Removal and Replacement” in
Chapter 6. This chapter assumes that the equipment was installed properly and
operational prior to a malfunction. It also assumes service personnel have a working
knowledge of PDR 200 operation. The chapter covers the items listed and briefly
described below.
Troubleshooting is usually a process of elimination - what isn’t wrong or what is
working properly. It involves going from the simplest possibilities, through a series
of steps, to the more complex.
Making basic checks - A list of things quickly checked to insure that the system is
physically in the correct condition.
Initial fault isolation checks - These checks, also quickly performed, can either be
resolved with a minimum of effort or point to appropriate starting possibilities.
- System interfaces.
- Front and rear panel indicators.
Start-up problems - If you shut the system down and then had problems restarting,
look at these possibilities.
Examining SCSI bus errors - Information here will help correct or eliminate storage
or retrieval problems.
Video problems - System error messages and symptoms will often point to video
problems, as shown by examples here of problems and corrective actions
Audio problems - Examples of audio problems and corrective actions.
Networking problems - Ethernet and/or Fibre Channel problems.
Board diagnostics - Board level checks for board-specific problems usually
associated with other symptoms, such as video, audio, or networking problems.
Making Basic Checks
Although installed and previously operating properly, power cords and signal cables
may become loose or inadvertently disconnected. A power switch may also
mistakenly be turned Off. Perform the basic checks listed below.
• Check all power cord connections.
• Check all cable connections.
• Insure all power switches (front and rear panel) are On.
• Check all cable connectors for broken or bent pins, replace as necessary
