Variable Cam Timing Control

Variable cam timing control will control the angle at which the cam operates according to what RPM and
Load the engine is currently at. The idea behind cam control is to move the position of the cam to a certain
angle that will change the efficiency of the engine and therefore improve the power made across a certain
RPM range where the extra power wouldn’t normally be made with a static cam. Variable cam timing
control won’t necessarily improve the maximum power but help stretch it out over a wider range of RPM.
Figure 111 shows 4 dyno runs which held the cam at different positions, 0°, 10°, 20° and 30° cam
degrees. The first run (in red) at 0 degrees shows the maximum power was made roughly at 6500 RPM
whereas the last run (in purple) at 30 degrees shows its maximum power at about 5500 RPM. The runs at
10 degrees (in blue) and 20 degrees (in green) show their maximum power as being between the 0
degree run and the 30 degree run. With the variable cam timing it is possible to start the cam angle at 30
degrees up to 5500 RPM and gradually move it down to 0 degrees when the engine goes to 6500 RPM
and therefore stretch out the RPM range where the maximum power is made. Note there is also extra
power made in the mid range of the RPM with the cam advance to 30 degrees.

Figure 111 - Dyno runs at 0° (red), 10° (blue), 20° (green) and 30° (purple) cam degrees.

WARNING!!!

Haltech provides the ability to control the cam timing but Haltech takes no responsibility for any
damage that may occur due to the cam position causing valve to piston or valve to valve
interference.

Cam input will require external hardware filtering and a flyback diode. Plug-in looms already have
the hardware filtering and flyback diode built into them. If you are attempting variable cam control
without the use of a plug-in loom please contact Haltech for assistance.
