MMR Modified Modified Read: A slightly improved version of MR designed for
use with low-line-noise digital telephony connections.
MR Modified Read: An improved version of MH fax image compression.
RTP Real-time Transfer Protocol: Protocol for transmitting the audio portion of a
VoIP call over IP networks. Codecs used are typically G.711 µ-law or G.729.
SIP Session Initiation Protocol: Standard VoIP protocol for placing and receiving
calls. SIP controls call setup and takedown as well as negotiating the audio
(RTP) channel or fax (T.38) channel.
T.30: The most fundamental ITU-T standard for fax.
T.38: The ITU-T standard for fax over IP networks.
T.4: ITU-T “Group 3” fax compression standard using the MH algorithm.
T.6: ITU-T “Group 4” fax compression standard using the MMR algorithm.
V.21: Low-speed (300 bit/s) “handshaking” protocol. Used for initial fax
negotiation and inter-page signaling.
