Interpreting Detailed Data About User Clicks
The examples in this section show you how to interpret detailed data about user clicks in an advanced
search report. The examples omit some values from the each entry in the advanced search report, as
indicated by the ellipses (...).
The following example shows a user searching on the term enterprise and finding a result on page 2 of
the listings:
1.
On a search page, the user enters the search term enterprise and clicks the search button. The
results page loads:
...,172.18.75.121,,load,,0,0,,enterprise
2.
The user does not find satisfactory results on the first results page and clicks Next:
...,172.18.75.121,,nav.next,0,0,,enterprise...
3.
On the second result page, the user clicks on the third result and navigates to http://
www.google.com/:
...,172.18.75.121,,c,1,3,,enterprise,http://www.google.com/
The following example shows a user searching on the term corfu clicking on the tenth result on the first
page of listings:
1.
On a search page, the user enters the search term corfu and clicks the search button. The results
page loads:
...,174.22.35.109,,load,,0,0,,corfu
2.
On the second result page, the user clicks on the third result and navigates to http://
www.google.com/:
...,174.22.35.109,,c,0,10,,corfu,http://www.corfu.com/
Using Advanced Search Reporting to Personalize the
Search Experience
The following steps outline an effective method for using advanced search reporting to personalize the
search experience:
1.
Getting baseline measurements of percentage of satisfied queries and average click rank (see
“Getting Baseline Measurements” on page 39).
2.
Analyzing user clicks to identify areas for improvement in a specific front end (see “Analyzing User
Clicks” on page 39).
3.
Personalizing the search experience using front ends (see “Personalizing the Search Experience
Using Front Ends” on page 40).
4.
Measuring the effectiveness of personalization (see “Measuring the Effectiveness of
Personalization” on page 40).
Because an advanced search report is a comma-separated values file, you can import it into a
spreadsheet where you can sort the values. For example, you might sort an advanced search report by
URL to find all user clicks that pertain to a specific URL.
