10.4.1.3.1 Type
On the Type tab, specify whether failover should occur manually or automatically.
For automatic failover, go to the Heartbeats tab to specify the necessary settings.
10.4.1.3.2 Sync
On the Sync tab, configure the network interface that must be used for data synchronization.
Data synchronization occurs when both NetVue Servers are running and continually synchronizing data.
Data synchronizes from the online NetVue Server to the backup NetVue Server.
If a third network interface connects both NetVue Servers with a cross cable, you could select it to
prevent synchronization failures.
10.4.1.3.3 Heartbeats
The Automatic Failover configuration uses heartbeats to monitor the functional status between pairs of
Redundant NetVue Servers.
Redundant NetVue Server pairs send heartbeats to each other at regular intervals. When a backup
server notices that the configured number of heartbeats are failing, it goes online automatically.
For every configured heartbeat, you can specify a maximum number of allowed failures. This helps
prevent the backup NetVue Server from taking over each time a single heartbeat fails.
Two types of standard heartbeats occur:
•
To a DataMiner (NetVue Server)
A NetVue Server communication check using IP port 8004. You specify the network interface to be
used for this type of heartbeat.
•
To an IP address
A simple ping request.
These standard heartbeats cause an offline NetVue Server to go online.
Additionally, you can configure inverted heartbeats. When an online NetVue Server discovers that all of
its inverted heartbeats are failing, it will go offline.
Inverted heartbeats are valuable in specific situations. For example, they help to detect a failing network
switch. This type of failure could cause both NetVue Servers to go online as soon as they can no longer
contact each other.

Preferred configuration (Best practice)
When you set up a redundant pair of NetVue Servers, it is best to:
